My own career path has reinforced all the advice that you hear from everyone else.
One, you’ll get where we want to be by not talking the straightest path. I never thought I would work in theatre or visual arts, but I would never trade those experiences for the world.
Two, you make the job, don’t let the job make you. In every job I have strived to make a difference to the organization and contribute in the most meaningful way I can. Making results leaves a mark not only on the success of the organization but in the mind of your superiors and your peers. And by helping make an organization succeed, you will succeed as well.
Three, network, network and network! Build your community, keep communications open, and build those relationships that have meaning to you. You never know when they are going to come in handy.
Four, keep learning. Find new ways inside and outside your job to build skills and experience. While at the CMC, I have expanded my writing and public speaking experience, have started taking on some guest lecturing, have worked on a feasibility plan for an expanded facility, explored my leadership skills, and improved my capacity for political advocacy. These were never areas into which I thought my career would expand, but I realize them to be crucial to my development, to the development of the next generation of arts manages, and to the career of a general manager, which is increasingly where my career is heading.
So what is next for me? For the first time in a while, I’m not exactly sure. And I’m okay with that. I like where I am now, and I like discovering where I am going. I’m four years into this directorship at the CMC and there is still so much to do! I’m sure that somewhere in future projects there will be something that sparks my motivation for the next big challenge. And when that comes, I know that my current work family will support me onto that next stage of my career.
