My journey from freelance director and artist educator to sitting at a desk has been quite a trip, but for me it has always been about balancing the artist with my full-time duties as an administrator. Currently I sit at a lovely window at the Tarragon Theatre as their Director of Education and Outreach, and believe me the window helps.
I accepted this position for many reasons, but one of them is that this is a seasonal-permanent post. This means I am released from the Tarragon for eight weeks every summer in perfect time to allow me to rehearse and mount a show at the Fringe, or at Summerworks, or even direct summerstock out of town. This gives me the flexibility as a director to pursue my own projects and develop my career without having to put in full-time hours at the Tarragon.
The other great thing about my job is that there are many things that take me away from my desk and feeds my directing and work as an artist. We offer different workshops for secondary schools as well as free programs for secondary or post-secondary students, many of which I lead. This fall I will be training young directors as part of a program I’ve created with the Sears Ontario Drama Festival called the Young Director’s Project. I will also be directing the members of our Spring Training Project in our first One Act Play Festival, which will showcase the work of our Young Playwrights Unit in May of 2008.
Yes, I still need to spend time with budgets, attending various meetings, talking with teachers about our student matinees over the phone, as well as trying to sell workshops as part of our Tarragon In The Schools program. However, for me it is a really good balance and at the end of the day I feel nourished as an artist, challenged as a director and even happy as an administrator. The window really does help with the last one.

I can understand that you feel this way because I experience some similar situation from working with lots of people in constant movement to now being part of the day in a chair in front of a screen. But enjoyable for me and hope that for you too.
This makes me laugh. I took business admin and quickly realized after a few modest related jobs, that it would take more than just a good view to keep me interested. Ug. Not my cup of tea. I just couldn’t hack it and my employer found that out fast.
Yes, lifes balance. Work play a big role in it. I’m thankful also to enjoy my quality of life and the fact that I enjoy my job. Cheers!
