Cultural Affairs

I really dislike the phrase “cultural affairs”.

It makes me think of bureaucracy, and red tape, and badly designed humourless websites that don’t let me know in time that we didn’t get our grant due to the fill in the blank government cutbacks.  This is what over a decade in the not for profit performing arts has led me to think of when I hear the phrase “cultural affairs”.  Add in the words “government” or “international” and I want to faint.

I’m taking it back. It’s my New Year’s Resolution.

From now on for me the phrase cultural affairs will be about cool and exciting things happening in the creative world around me - occurrences that inspire and educate and provoke conversation and thought.  Not about what isn’t being done, or can’t be done, but what is happening and working all over the world.

Have you ever heard of Paducah, Kentucky?  Neither had I until a while ago.  At a time when funding for the arts is constantly being cut, Paducah has established an environment where artists and the arts are flourishing. Paducah’s Artist Relocation Program was started in August of 2000 and is now a national model for using the arts for economic development. The Artist Relocation Program has been awarded the Governors Award in the Arts, The Kentucky Chapter of the American Planning Association Distinguished Planning Award, The American Planning Association National Planning Award and most recently Kentucky League of Cities Enterprise Cities Award.  The Artist Relocation Program is about artist ownership, thus giving the artists a vested interest in their community. To date they have relocated seventy artists from all over the USA.

Okay that’s a cultural affair I can get into.

What else is happening in cultural affairs?  The Canadian Government has launched the Podcasts.culture.ca website, the Government of Canada's very first directory of Canadian cultural podcasts.  Podcasts.culture.ca, an on-line service accessible through Culture.ca, is a new Internet directory of audio and video files for listening or viewing on demand. Web visitors are invited to download the files directly from the directory, which has a starting collection of more than 300 Canadian podcasts related to the arts, heritage, and society, and is aimed at anyone who wants to explore, find, and share in the best of Canada's cultural and creative life.

I hope EAP podcasts get to be on it.

You know what?  I am but one person.  I saw and heard about those ones.  I’d like to hear what else is going on in cultural affairs that is important to people.  Remember the New Year’s resolution disclaimer above: occurrences that inspire and educate and provoke conversation and thought.

Happy New Year!  Happy cultural affairs!

Start a business. Major in business administration but don’t listen to everything they teach..cause if they knew it all so well..They’d be an entrepreneur too. Always find more out about what they teach..don’t take it all in at first until you know a successful business owner that tells you the truth.

It’s great to hear your success story. All of us has our own path. Never feel inferior to the others, since we have our own ability. Your sister might be great, but you do have your own strength. Focus on that and you will be successful.

phrase cultural affairs…makes me think of good things as well…colaboration of different cultures…mixtures of different cultures from different parts of the world…basically makes me think of cultural mix…and when cultures mix..that is one of the most beatiful things in the world…
